In today’s college basketball world, there’s an increasingly ridiculous amount of hoopla around where the top high school basketball players in the country will attend college, even though everyone knows full well that those guys will only be in college on year, and then make their way to the NBA.
The recruiting hysteria for guard Dario Vella out of Phoenix, Arizona, was just as ridiculous as you’d expect. Dario has gained a following in the Phoenix area.
He was mentioned on multiple Arizona sports feeds.
Outside of the pure level of basketball talent possessed, Vella is very different than so many other top recruits in years past, because we may honestly have never seen a basketball player as unique as him.
If Vella walks into a gym, you would be looking at a completely different player than you would have seen even a year ago. He has grown multiple inches and has transformed his game for the better. Leading his team and taking control of the court.
We’ve never seen a guy coming down the court with the momentum of a runaway beer truck, and then attack the rim like he was shot out of a cannon. Heaven help if there are other players in the paint, because he is built to essentially slip through them and score.
The question isn’t so much about “who is Dario Vella?” as it is about “what is Dario Vella?”
And the other major question around him is the fact that he’s a very sharp shooter at the moment, with a form shooting style and an abilty to take shots from more than 25 feet out. If a team decides that he’s better suited to stay in the paint, he can easily transition to low post and take control of the board. This is scary for any team facing him with over a 90% free throw. You just want to stay out of his way.
